A new baby snuggler

The other day I was at the fabric store looking for some great fabrics to make a snuggle quilt for a new little baby girl of a friend of my parents.

I saw this whole line in a little shelf and fell in love immediately.  I bought a quarter yard of each right there.

We were going to be with my parents for Thanksgiving so it would be a great time to pass it on to her rather than having to wrangle two little ones at the post office to mail it so I stayed up late last night to finish it.

I really liked the end result.  Its not as large as a typical quilt and not as small as a typical snuggle quilt.  I like to think of it as large enough for a little one to sit under and snuggle with but small enough to tote around without being too cumbersome.

Minkey is a tricky and stretchy little monkey to work with and because of that and the fact that I didn't stop and iron like I usually do it ended up a little scrunchy which I actually kind of like.  It gives it a puffier look without adding the weight of puff.

Its super soft and snuggly and I think this is going to be the pattern for a baby quilt for our new little one.

For the love of grandmas....

For the last few weeks I've been working away on two projects for the same new grandma.

One of my mom's best friends just became a grandma this summer.  She initially asked me to create a quilt for the baby and then in secret my mom asked me to create a "grandma" quilt for her friend to keep at her home to be the special snuggle quilt at granma's house.

The first quilt for the baby came together easy.  I love the fabrics and I loved how the embroidery came together on the back.  I just loved it.

I really struggled with finishing up this little number.  I loved the top but couldn't find the right back for it.  I finished the other one first and called my mom to tell her that I loved the baby's quilt more than hers.  I just couldn't finish it up in a way that I loved.  Then I decided to try a different way to finish it by just folding the backing over.

And now I love it too.  LOVE IT!  It has a SUPER high snuggle factor.  Like a 10 out of 10 snuggle factor.

I google translated a bunch of different ways to say grandma and appliqued them on to the front of the quilt.

Mom had the shower this weekend and presented her friend with both.  Yay!

For Baby Nellie or lil' nel

This weekend I finished the last of this round of baby quilts and this one goes to baby Nellie .

I had been wanting to try this raw edge circle quilt ever since I saw Allison's tutorial for it over on her blog, 

Cluck, Cluck, Sew.

If not, you really should.  

Its one of my favorites.

Here's the full front view.  Its pretty small.  Nellie's mama told me that Nellie's been using her big sister Jane's Auntie Tyra quilt laid out on the bottom of her pack and play so this is (almost) pack and play dimensions.  Its also a good size to drag around once's she's on the move.

All the fabrics are leftovers from my Single Girl fabrics and I'm quite happy to say that I didn't purchase one square inch of new fabric or even batting for this quilt.  

Although I really love the fabrics used in Allison's original.  

If I could go back in time I would buy out the American Jane Recess line and hoard it forever.

I've been LOVING Nettie's curved corners over at A Quilt Is Nice and had to try them out on this guy.

I didn't take the time to make true bias binding tape and I think next time I will.  It turned out fine but the corners do have a slight pucker to them because I didn't take the time to do it.

Nettie seems to have been particularly inspiring to me this week because I also tried out her quilting straight lines tutorial for my quilting design.  I really like how it turned out and it was nice to depart a little from my typical stippling.

There is something so sweet and quaint about a baby named Nellie such that I can't hear her name without hearing in my mind poems about little girls with ringlet curls referred to as lil' Nel.

So I put lil nel on the back to mark it as her own.  In a home with three older sisters I'm sure she'll need help claiming things once in awhile.

I really liked how it turned out and it came together quite quickly once I got going on it.  A nice distraction from my pile of single girl curves beckoning me.  Sort of cleansed the palette and now I'm ready to dive in for some more.

What day is it?

You would think that since I'm a stay at home mama, without a work week to mark my days by I wouldn't be so thrown off by a silly thing like Presidents day.  Well when I sat down to type this post I was all ready to blast out a WIP Wednesday Post about my Single Girl piecing but what do you know?  

Its turns out its Thursday.  

So what shall we do?

We'll just go with it and pretend it was all planned out anyway.  Who knows, maybe it will stick?

The other day I showed off a little of my work in progress, the hexie snuggler. 

 And last night I finished her up and today she's all packaged up and ready to head off to 

Mississippi to baby Claire.  

(am I the only one who still has to do the M-i-s-s-I-s-s-I-pp-I chanty thing when I spell Mississippi? 

 Or I spell it wrong?)

Claire's mama was one of my dear college roomies and her favorite color was red.  Maybe it still is?  Whenever I think of her mom I always think of bright colors.  Like those pretty painted earthenware plates you buy in Mexico.  And parrots.  

Anyway, the long and the short is that I felt compelled, no driven to have Claire's snuggler red.  And since its creation coincided with my intruduction to my new love of hexigons, we ended up with this little bumble bee motif.

I carried it around all day in my bag yesterday and kept catching glimpses of it and all its bright colors would give my heart a happy little jump.  I guess that's one (of the many) things her mama and I have had in common.  

We love bright colors.

So there you go baby Claire!  Its on its way!  I wish I could deliver it in person!

For baby Henry...

Its raining and blustering like crazy here today.  We're hunkered down in our pj's watching scooby doo and drinking tea. I think I might get a few more fabrics cut for my single girl quilt.  What could be better?

I thought I'd post today about a little project that's been on my mind for oh, the last six months or so.

In college I was lucky enough to land the five best roomates/friends/sisters-from-another-misters that a girl could hope for.  Since we've started our own new little families, I've made a special quilt for each of the sweet little babies.  In this last year we've added four more babies to our brood which now totals 14 (10 girls and 4 boys).  It seems that we all seem to be on the same baby timing schedule and this year since one of the babies was my own, I've been a little slow getting these new ones finished.  But here is Baby Henry's snuggle quilt!.  

I have usually done a crib or craft sized quilt for each of the kiddos but this time since Baby Henry is number three in the Wheadon home, I figured they probably have a lot of baby quilts.  So for this one, I made Henry his own little snuggly.

I busted out the ol' embroidery arm and labeled Henry's snuggler for his own.  I used some sort of minky fabric which was beyond soft.

Because minky has some height to it and is really stretchy, I used both dissolveable and tear away stabilizer.  It came out really nice.

I have seen so many of these little flag/bunting typed designs around and I just love them.  It was a great way to use some little scrappy leftovers.

Its raining cats and dogs here today so I think we may take a little field trip to the post office just to get out of the house and get this little guy off to his new home.

Really Henry is the newest of our new crop of kiddos with Claire and little Nel arriving last spring and summer.  Don't worry girls, yours are next.  I promise to have them to you before you turn one okay?
